Sonos Launches 1% for the Planet Membership to Support Climate Action

Nov 7, 2023

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Today, Sonos (NASDAQ: SONO) announced it joined 1% for the Planet, committing to donate 1% of annual Certified Refurbished sales to support high-impact environmental organizations. Deepening the company’s commitment to climate action, Sonos celebrates its robust refurbished program which extends the lives of products, meaningfully reducing waste, and environmental impact.

"Our commitment to refurbishing products is not just about extending the life of our technology but also significantly reducing waste and environmental impact. Joining 1% for the Planet is a meaningful step forward as we remain committed to taking action in support of high-impact environmental organizations," says Deji Olukotun, Director of Global Affairs & Sustainability at Sonos.

Since launching its Climate Action Plan in 2021, Sonos continues to make strides on its commitment to sustainability. In 2023, Sonos released the Sonos Era 100, Sonos Era 300, and Sonos Move 2 featuring post-consumer recycled plastic, better serviceability, and lower energy usage, all wrapped in Sonos’s award-winning sustainable packaging. Sonos provides comprehensive updates on its climate progress and performance in its annual Listen Better Report.

Sonos introduced its Regenerative Sound philanthropic initiative by supporting environmental conservation through ecoacoustics, a field which uses AI and acoustic sensors to understand biodiversity. Initial support from Sonos went to projects at leading institutions such as the Scripps Acoustic Ecology Laboratory at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego and the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at Cornell University. In 2023, Sonos launched a social impact campaign in support of Rainforest Connection, a global nonprofit dedicated to preserving biodiversity around the world. Sonos is helping support Rainforest Connection’s work in Malaysian Borneo, and other project sites around the world, to leverage sound and artificial intelligence to preserve the planet’s most critical habitats.

Partnering with 1% for the Planet enables Sonos to deepen its investment in high-impact environmental nonprofits.

“Currently, only 3% of total philanthropy goes to the environment and only 5% of that comes from businesses. The planet needs bigger support than this, and our growing network of business members are doing vital work to increase giving and support on-the-ground action. We're excited to welcome Sonos to our global movement,” says Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet.

By contributing a percentage of their sales, thousands of 1% for the Planet members have raised millions in funding to support environmental partners around the globe. Partners are vetted and approved based on referrals, track record, and environmental focus. With over 5,000 environmental partners in the 1% for the Planet network, every member can find and support the causes that matter most to them.
